Essential Oil of the Month

Peppermint Essential Oil

Many people have fond Christmas memories that includes peppermint. Maybe you left a peppermint candy cane for old Saint Nick or snuck a peppermint from grandma’s candy jar.  Christmas and peppermints go hand in hand.  That is why we chose peppermint as our feature oil for our winter newsletter.

Peppermint (Mentha piperita ) is an aromatic perennial plant that grows to a height of about 3 ft. It has light purple flowers and green leaves with serrated edges. Peppermint grows throughout North America, Asia, and Europe. There are more than 25 species of true mint grown throughout the world.

Dr. Josh Axe explains, “The particles in essential oils come from distilling or extracting the different parts of plants, including the flowers, leaves, bark, roots, resin and peels. In ancient times, Jews and Egyptians made essential oils by soaking the plants in oil and then filtering the oil through a linen bag.”

Peppermint oil has a scent which is refreshing and gives the body a great energy boost. It is effective in treating:

Stomach aches

Digestive issues

Improves mental focus

Clears respiratory tract

Releases tight muscles

Applying peppermint to the forehead and temples helps with headaches but beware, too much peppermint can give you a migraine.  Spiders, ants, mosquitoes and other insects are repelled by the smell of peppermint.  Adding a few drops to the filter on your vacuum will fill the house with a refreshing scent each time you clean and keeps unwanted critters away.

As a note, RYV does not recommend that any Essential Oils be taken orally or ingested, or used on children less than 6 months of age.

It is important to consult an aromatherapist when considering using EOs on young children.

Exfoliating Scrub – Great Gift Idea!

Use peppermint essential oil to create your own exfoliating sugar scrub by following this recipe, compliments of Craftinomicon.

You will need:

  • 4 – 5 tbsp organic cane sugar
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (or another oil such as organic cold-pressed coconut oil)
  • 1 tsp flax seed oil
  • 3 – 4 drops Peppermint oil
  • a small glass jar for storage

Simply mix all of the ingredients together. Perfect for the holidays!

General Purpose Disinfectant

For general purpose cleaning, we recommend the following two essential oil combinations:

Tea tree + Peppermint – (great against the Flu and E. coli)

Lime + Peppermint – (excellent broad spectrum antibacterial power)

To make this all-natural cleaner, fill a 16 oz. spray bottle almost to the top with water and add about 2 teaspoons total of your chosen essential oils. Remember to shake well before each use as the mixture will separate quickly.
